In the beautiful post-preclin exam sunshine of June 2014 we held our inaugural RUMSBC Parent's Day at the River. It was an opportunity for parents, friends and inquisitive RUMS members to find out what its like to be a member of RUMSBC. We showed them where we rowed, gave them a chance to try out rowing for themselves and of course gave a great demonstration of RUMSBC hospitality and fun.
With a barbecue providing burgers and hotdogs and a bar providing Pimms and beer, it was a beautiful day beside the river and all the parents thoroughly made use of what we had to offer; both the refreshments and the rowing coaching. We gave all the guests an opportunity to experience what it is like to be in a boat (starting them off with the basics) and then gave them an opportunity to watch a couple of races. The first race of two eights went fantastically; a good race of mixed crews; men and women, novices and seniors, with a tight finish. The second race of an eight and a four did not go so well with the eight embarrassingly losing to the four comprised of our second year boys. On the whole, the day was a great success. The family and friends that attended had a great time and we raised much needed money from the bar and food as well as generous donations from several parents. This is only the beginning to what will hopefully be many fun and profitable fundraising events to come. Special thanks to the Fundraising Committee members of 2013/14 Tom Hughes and Chetna Sharma for putting the whole day together.
